Read before you venture to work in the Middle East. The truth behind the glitz.

Expats in Dubai become homeless per Harry Newton's column

Dubai did build the world's largest tower (not completed), an indoor ski slope, a honeymoon suite with a live whale shark, the flamboyant Plastik club that billed itself "Exclusively For The Filthy Rich And Aesthetically Perfect," and a beach with underground refrigeration because the sand was too hot..

Dubai turned out to be a nightmare for many. Here's the story of a couple from Canada :

Karen Andrews can't speak. Every time she starts to tell her story, she puts her head down and crumples. She is slim and angular and has the faded radiance of the once-rich, even though her clothes are as creased as her forehead. I find her in the car park of one of Dubai 's finest international hotels, where she is living, in her Range Rover. She has been sleeping here for months, thanks to the kindness of the Bangladeshi car park attendants who don't have the heart to move her on. This is not where she thought her Dubai dream would end.

Her story comes out in stutters, over four hours. At times, her old voice - witty and warm - breaks through. Karen came here from Canada when her husband was offered a job in the senior division of a famous multinational. "When he said Dubai , I said - if you want me to wear black and quit booze, baby, you've got the wrong girl. But he asked me to give it a chance. And I loved him."

All her worries melted when she touched down in Dubai in 2005. "It was an adult Disneyland , where Sheikh Mohammed is the mouse," she says. "Life was fantastic. You had these amazing big apartments, you had a whole army of your own staff, you pay no taxes at all.. It seemed like everyone was a CEO. We were partying the whole time."

Her husband, Daniel, bought two properties. "We were drunk on Dubai ," she says. But for the first time in his life, he was beginning to mismanage their finances. "We're not talking huge sums, but he was getting confused. It was so unlike Daniel, I was surprised. We got into a little bit of debt." After a year, she found out why: Daniel was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

One doctor told him he had a year to live; another said it was benign and he'd be okay. But the debts were growing. "Before I came here, I didn't know anything about Dubai law. I assumed if all these big companies come here, it must be pretty like Canada 's or any other liberal democracy's," she says. Nobody told her there is no concept of bankruptcy. If you get into debt and you can't pay, you go to prison.

"When we realised that, I sat Daniel down and told him: listen, we need to get out of here. He knew he was guaranteed a pay-off when he resigned, so we said - right, let's take the pay-off, clear the debt, and go." So Daniel resigned - but he was given a lower pay-off than his contract suggested. The debt remained. As soon as you quit your job in Dubai , your employer has to inform your bank. If you have any outstanding debts that aren't covered by your savings, then all your accounts are frozen, and you are forbidden to leave the country.

"Suddenly our cards stopped working. We had nothing. We were thrown out of our apartment." Karen can't speak about what happened next for a long time; she is shaking.

Daniel was arrested and taken away on the day of their eviction. It was six days before she could talk to him. "He told me he was put in a cell with another debtor, a Sri Lankan guy who was only 27, who said he couldn't face the shame to his family. Daniel woke up and the boy had swallowed razor-blades. He banged for help, but nobody came, and the boy died in front of him.."

Karen managed to beg from her friends for a few weeks, "but it was so humiliating. I've never lived like this. I worked in the fashion industry. I had my own shops. I've never..." She peters out.

Daniel was sentenced to six months' imprisonment at a trial he couldn't understand. It was in Arabic, and there was no translation. "Now I'm here illegally, too," Karen says I've got no money, nothing.. I have to last nine months until he's out, somehow." Looking away, almost paralysed with embarrassment, she asks if I could buy her a meal.

She is not alone. All over the city, there are maxed-out expats sleeping secretly in the sand-dunes or the airport or in their cars.

"The thing you have to understand about Dubai is - nothing is what it seems," Karen says at last. "Nothing. This isn't a city, it's a con-job. They lure you in telling you it's one thing - a modern kind of place - but beneath the surface it's a medieval dictatorship."

IT'S 112 NOT 999 Emergency Number worldwide for GSM Mobile

Ladies especially... ..please, please read!
It's 112 not 999!

A young lady was robbed and slashed on the face two days ago in Taman Desa. She just got off from her car and was in front of her friend's house pressing door bell.. She saw a motorbike with two men coming toward her direction but she thought they were security guards. Then before she knew anything, one of the men has already slashed her face with a knife and grabbed her bag. She didn't know it was a cut until she touched her face and found out it was bleeding. She was screaming out of shock. One of the man came back (they were already on the motorbike and ready to leave) and tried to slash her again. Luckily she was able to hold on his hand to stop the attack. At that time, her friend came out to check what happen and the men quickly ran away.

The cut was 9 cm long and 1 cm deep. Now those robbers' tactic! is to hurt you first before they rob you so that you are handicapped and can't resist them. Even later there are someone to help, they have to rescue you first  instead of chasing them. Please be alert all the time and take every precaution measure you could.

Emergency Number:

Please be aware the Emergency Number worldwide for GSM Mobile (012, 013, 016, 017, 019) is 112 and not 999.

You can dial 112 even without a Sim Card. If you find yourself out of coverage   area of your mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number   for you..   Do share this important info with your family members and friends.

You were accused of a crime and either after a trial or a plea bargain, you were found guilty and sentenced to do time in prison. You will spend most of your time in a locked building with people who have done despicable things, some worse than you can imagine. If you behave, it might go easier on you. Nonetheless, you will have to make the best of it if you are going to survive.

STEP 1

Think about why you were sent to prison. Is it a serious crime? If so, say that you will never do crime again. The saying, 'If you can't do the time, don't do the crime,' is very true.

STEP 2

Do not cry, show your fear, or vulnerability publicly. Doing so will quickly make you a target for other prisoners

STEP 3

Learn to play spades, pinochle, chess, or basketball as it makes the time go by faster

STEP 4

Get a prison job which will keep you occupied as the days pass by.

STEP 5

Read a lot. They have a library there, so use it. Catch up on your reading. Take correspondence courses and continue your education. Consider writing as well. Letters to friends and family, fictional short-stories, and poetry can make time pass a bit faster.

STEP 6

Work out. It will make the time go by faster, and is an outlet for stress. In addition, physically fit people are less likely to be targeted as victims for strong-arm tactics.

STEP 7

Brace yourself for the social dynamics of prison. There are certain ways to behave towards others if you want to get by:
  • Do not become a 'punk' (girlfriend), ever! While becoming a punk might give you some fleeting, temporary protection from other inmates, you will be a slave to one. Punks are used and abused. They are traded away in card games and sold for cigarettes. It is not a path to long term survival in prison. If confronted to become a punk, fight and continue to fight. You will gain at least some measure of respect for fighting back. NEVER GIVE IN.
  • Do not snitch. If you see something illegal or violent, walk away and do not divulge any information if questioned later. Being known as a snitch will make bad things happen to you. (Of course, you have to decide whether your fellow inmates or the authorities are more dangerous. If you're questioned and lie to the jailkeepers, you can get in serious legal trouble. You are probably better off saying that you saw nothing, or that your head was turned.)
  • Stick up for yourself or you WILL be turned into a punk. It's better to get into a fight and lose than to be seen cowering or placating (even better to win). Your reputation is more important than your desire to avoid pain, so guard it with your life. Ultimately you should avoid any confrontation if you can, but if you can't avoid one, react quickly and with aggression. So swing first. If you happen to get beat down, NEVER call for the correctional officers--NEVER. Doing so will get you labeled a punk, and you will have more fights coming as a result.

STEP 8

Beware of rape. You are more likely to be raped if you have been confined for sexual offenses, especially against juveniles, show any weakness or are even shy, have any feminine characteristics or are younger. Keep quiet about your offense, and if you were convicted of a sex crime you will need to go into protective custody, grow a beard and cut that long hair.

STEP 9

Keep to yourself, keep your mouth shut and do not tell anyone about your personal life, family, or criminal history--keep them wondering, but don't overdo it. By all means, do not lie and say you are in for something more serious than the crime you got convicted of: you can get into a lot of trouble with other inmates for faking.

STEP 10

Do not discuss politics or personal feelings about anyone. In other words, don't put your business out on the street. At the same time, don't get involved in other inmates' business.

STEP 11

Recognize that nights are the worst. You will miss your family, and freedom. You will probably cry, but you had better stifle it into your pillow so no one will hear.

STEP 12

Use good behavior. You will leave early (if lucky.)

TIPS

Stay in contact with friends and family. Letters, cards and the occasional phone call will really help you maintain your sanity and an active role with your family. You may be out of sight for a while, but there is no reason to stay out of mind.

  • Tear up the return address from your incoming mail and cover the dial pad when calling home. Other inmates will write or call your friends and family if given a chance.
  • Don't get caught up in a jailhouse romance (DON'T BECOME A PUNK!). The last thing you need is to be getting involved in a relationship, for any number of reasons. The first of which is that it is the biggest sign of weakness. A punk is simply meat for the dogs (your fellow inmates).
  • Respect the prison staff. While they are not there to help you, disrespecting them can make your time there worse. But don't get too friendly: they will turn on you too (there is an economic system in prison, and it involves staff, too; they have reasons to use you as well).
  • Take pleasure in the feel of the sunlight on your face, the sound of the birds chirping and the wind in your hair. Find joy in things. Do not show high or low emotions or feelings. Count blessings and work on inner strengths and weaknesses. Keep your spirit and self worth intact. Plan for today and tomorrow. Keep tomorrows and liberty in sight. In limited and constrictive surroundings where one is compromised, our senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell filtered by our emotions and feelings tempered by mind and body and must be controlled and thought through for some balance of normalcy to situations. Use that mind and keep it alert and active. Do not react; learn how to act. Know the playing field. Know your options and what you have to work with. Listen. Share carefully. Ask carefully. Learn. Build on self and learn how to lean on self and make yourself accountable to your efforts and aims. These are free and they can't take them away from you (unless you go to Seg - but that's a warning).
  • Determine to change your life completely so that you never have to spend time in prison again.
  • When walking, always look ahead. Don't stare at others, but don't wander around staring at your feet.
  • If your time is getting short or if you are being transferred to a lesser facility, DON'T tell anyone. Out of spite some convicts will get a sick glee from getting you sent to the hole or lengthening your time.
  • For the truly hardcore in states where it is allowed, you can avoid any parole time by doing your time in the hole up to your mandatory release date. This gets rid of any "good time" which you will serve on paper (which means, when you are done, you are done: no parole, and therefore no parole violations!). Not recommended, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.
  • Prison is like a warzone, so it is better not to commit a crime in the first place

WARNINGS

  • The information here mostly only applies to American prisons. If you are incarcerated in a non-American facility then you will have to learn different codes of behavior. For example, American prisons are notorious for male rape, a problem not so severe in Europe.
  • Do not admit or discuss any crime against a minor. Child molesters, abusers, and murderers are considered the lowest forms of life in prison and subject to frequent attacks. If you are convicted of a crime against a child, insist on being placed in Protective Custody immediately. You will not be able to hide the nature of your crime in a general population prison for long. You risk your life when (not if) other prisoners find out.
  • Do not gamble, unless you can pay your debts. They will use violence and stop at almost nothing to get what is due to them.
  • Remember, you are in a house of thieves, rapists, murderers, and liars, and you should not believe very much of anything you hear. Do not trust other inmates except in cases where there would not be serious consequences for doing so: i.e., make careful choices regarding your "friends" and your location at any given moment of the day.
  • Avoid drug use in prison! Drug use, while providing a temporary escape, will lead to many, many other problems (i.e., addiction, becoming a punk, more time if caught, death [as the drugs are not too clean]).
  • Avoid tattoos. Prison tattoos can be unsanitary and lead to hepatitis or other diseases. Also, they are permanent and may be a signal to everyone that you were once an inmate.
  • No matter how mad that person makes you, do not lose your line and time behind them. They are not going to get you home any quicker. And getting your line and time taken will keep you there longer.
  • Do what you must do, but do not lose sight of the reason for surviving - getting out.
  • Do not try to escape or you will be kept in jail a lot longer.

How to Help a Friend Who Gets Arrested in the Middle of the Night

It is 2 AM and someone you know has just been arrested. You know you need legal help. You do not want your friend to make a confession, be in a line-up, or even get fingerprinted if it can be avoided. It is tough to know what to do or who to trust. Moreover, you do not know who will even answer the phone at that time of day. Here is what you need to know if this happens in the United States of America.

STEP 1

Find out where they are being held and by what police agency. Whether you get the call from a police officer or your friend, make sure that this is the first thing you ask. If you can, tell your friend that you are finding a lawyer and not to answer any compromising police questions until that lawyer arrives. In short, the 'name, rank, and serial number' response will do fine. They shouldalways cooperate, but the less said until a lawyer arrives, the better. Anything they say, even to you over the phone, can be used against them in court, and having a lawyer present as a defense mediation between them and the police is essential. Your friend must immediately say, "I want a lawyer" and the police cannot interrogate him. Even if he has to repeat this again and again, it will save him from saying something that may be used against him in court.

STEP 2

Ask what the actual charge is, and do not let them try to ask you what happened. The call is not privileged and it can, and probably will, be recorded by police for later use. If the arrested is an adult, the police are not required to tell a friend or family member anything.

STEP 3

Advise them to tell the officer they will not answer questions or take tests without a lawyer present. Tell them not to make any statements about any alleged offenses and tell them not to take any tests, with the exception of alcohol screening tests (see warnings), unless or until they get advice from a lawyer. Only the arrested subject can invoke his rights; you can not do it for them.

STEP 4

Find a criminal defense attorney. Keep calling lawyers until you find one that either answers their phone or has an answering service that can reach them anytime, day or night

STEP 5

Tell the lawyer that your friend is arrested and give him the address of the Police Station, and as much information as you know. Many lawyers will do this for free, but may request payment of at least $150-$350 for that call.

STEP 6

Gather as much money as you can to pay the lawyer in court and to post bail. It is more important to get a good lawyer on the case early than to immediately get your friend out of jail.

STEP 7

Afterwards, make sure to see if your friend was Mirandized before being questioned. If the police interrogate a suspect without informing him/her of his/her rights, the interrogation is not admissible in court.

TIPS

  • Most minor crimes and traffic violations can be bailed out from the station house through the use of a desk appearance ticket or a desk sergeant's bail.

  • Tell the lawyer you found that you will need his services for the purpose of securing your friend's rightsonly for the night in question and possibly the next day at arraignment if that is scheduled; do not sign a long-term retainer without the accused's participation.
  • Any legal fee for standing in at arraignment should be either a flat fee or at an hourly rate. Most criminal defense attorneys will charge between $150-$350 per hour, more in some urban areas.
  • At the arraignment, (the formal reading of criminal charges, and entering the plea), you do not have to use the lawyer that helped originally. If the accused cannot afford to hire a lawyer, a public defender will be appointed to represent them. Often the best and most knowledgeable lawyers in the courthouse will be the public defenders, though they will invariably be the busiest as well, and will not be able to offer your friend as much time as a private attorney will. Your friend will probably be best served by hiring a private attorney, however, a public defender will be available if that is impossible. Avoid hiring lawyers who solicit you in the courthouse hallways!
  • If you run into trouble finding out where your friend is being held and by what police agency, seek the services of a bail bondsman, as they are experienced at this, and can sometimes locate your friend faster than you.
  • Remember, the best way to help with the problems associated with being arrested is to avoid the arrest in the first place. Keep out of fights, drink responsibly, drive responsibly, and help friends do so as well.
  • This is a terribly embarrassing time. Keep the information on a need to know basis. Don't call friends or co-workers of the jailed friend. If the friend will miss work because of the incarceration, you may want to consider asking your friend for their manager's email or phone number and determine if they want the boss informed of the situation. If it is a secret, you should determine the most appropriate "reason" for your friends absence from work.
  • Consider calling their parents, especially if you cannot or chose not to get involved. If your friend has an alcohol or drug problem, they may be trying to avoid parents. The parents may also be willing to assist you with the financial burden of getting your friend out of jail. They may choose to remain anonymous to avoid embarrassment.

WARNINGS

  • In some states, you have a very limited time or no right at all to contact a lawyer regarding alcohol testing. Also, in many states, refusal to take an alcohol test carries the same penalty as a test failure. Failure to submit to an alcohol screening test, in some states, will result in an automatic suspension of your driver's license, since agreeing to take those tests was a condition of receiving your license. On the other hand, the person arrested may have a good reason not to permit a blood test, (e.g., presence of other substances in blood), as losing driving privileges might not be the biggest worry. Never ask the police for advice; they are paid to be against the arrested person. Get a lawyer on the phone as quickly as possible and ask him.
  • Police do not have to "read you your rights," and their failure to do so does not invalidate an arrest. They only have to give you your rights if they (a) arrest you and (b) ask you questions about the crime. There are some exceptions to this rule, but they are technical and only a properly trained lawyer can usually identify them; in any case, it is always better to be safe and not volunteer information. Hence, tell your friend to just remain calm and keep asking for an attorney.
  • The police are public servants and have a very vital job to perform, but this does not mean they won't try to trick you. When investigating a crime, police are not prevented from giving you misleading or outright untrue information in an effort to elicit a statement from you. Accordingly, don't take everything a police officer says as necessarily true.
  • An oral statement is just as bad as a written statement. It is always best to say nothing.
  • Do not worry if you cannot find an attorney to represent them in court without being retained. Some courts will not let a non-retained lawyer stand in at arraignment. The court must provide an attorney at an arraignment if one is requested, or give the accused time to retain someone before he is arraigned.
  • Never hire an attorney who comes up to you in a hallway outside the courtroom or courthouse and offers his services. He is soliciting and that is unethical. Judges and court personnel know who these people are and do not treat them with respect. It will hurt you.
  • Beware the "Dump Truck" lawyer, ready to rush into a plea bargain. Make sure the lawyer you hire is willing to look into the facts of the case and will believe in your friend and and trust your friend's story until it's disproved

How to Escape from Handcuffs

Harry Houdini's fame began with his ability to escape from handcuffs, becoming known as "The Handcuff King" in Europe. While you might not be seeking a career as an escapologist, you can still entertain your friends with similar tricks. These instructions will allow you to escape from some brands of handcuffs when your hands are in front of you (but this method is impossible if your hands are at your back with the keyhole facing away, as is the case when a law enforcement officer makes an arrest). This is a magic trick that you can perform for your friends, if you trust them enough to unlock the cuffs if your trick doesn't work

STEP 1

Use Smith and Wesson Model 100 double lock handcuffs. This method may work on other brands, test them first to make sure (without putting them on).

STEP 2

Get a regular bobby pin and pull away the plastic covering on the end so that it will work correctly

STEP 3

After the little tip is clear of the plastic, bend the end that had been concealed and put it into the key hole.

STEP 4

Take it out, and bend it the other way. and you should end up in an angle shape just like this.

STEP 5

Insert the bobby pin in the keyhole.

STEP 6

On the very edge, take the bobby pin and bend it down. This will release the latches that will open the jaws of the handcuffs.

STEP 7

If you have a double lock, put the bobby pin in the keyhole on the other side, release the double lock, turn it around to release the latches and open the jaw.

STEP 8

As you can see, this shows that it handcuffed in tight, and in about 5 seconds the handcuffs will open wide.

TIPS
Use your own set of handcuffs, and buy two sets. That way, you'll have two keys. Make sure that both keys can unlock either set interchangeably. When you perform this trick, use one set, and give the crowd what they think is the only key. Have the second key hidden nearby just in case the people you're performing for (your mischievous friends) decided to go out for burgers once they see your bobby pin broke.

This may also work on other cuffs that use the standard cuff key, such as Peerless, Hiatt, ASP, and Chicago brand cuffs.

WARNINGS

  • 1. The pick may break when you're working on the double lock because of the additional force needed.

  • 2. Again, this is only for entertainment. If you get arrested it will be more difficult, because the police will have your hands behind your back and the cuffs might be of a brand that this technique doesn't work with.

  • 3. If you do get arrested and try to escape, the police officer might even double the jail time if any
